The ASH-NAD Foundation grew from the offices of ASHMEAD ALI CONTRACTING SERVICES LTD. of #590 Cipero Road, Via Cross Crossing, San Fernando. The Foundation was registered as a non-profit organization on 01st May, 2013 by its Directors, Ashmead J. Ali and Nadeira Y. Khan focused on 'Giving A Helping Hand' to those in need.
Its objectives are to assist and improve the lives of the muslim community of Trinidad and Tobago. During its existence the Foundation has been involved in the following projects:
1. Distribution of Hampers for the needy every two (2) months.
2. Providing entertainment through international nasheed singers.
3. Sponsorship of various lectures held throughout the country by internationally
reknowned Islamic scholars.
4. Inter-jamaat cricket competitions.
5. Family Day events.
6. Construction and renovation of homes.
7. Distribution of toys and gifts to children on the annual occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr.
8. Construction and renovations of various mosques.
9. Provision of trips to the Holy Land.
10. Assorted books and Islamic literature to various mosques and households.
Prior to its formation, the Directors have been doing the various charitable acts listed above, and additionally, over the last thirteen years.
1. HAMPERS
Every 2 months The ASH-NAD Foundation embarks on a project of distribution over 200 (Initially started with 100) hampers to needy families throughout the island. These hampers comprise of basic daily food items such as rice, sugar, milk, water, cooking oil, beans etc.
2. CONCERTS
In March, 2016 the Foundation hosted U.K. international singer, Brother Ahmad Hussain ‘Live In Concert’ which had over 1000 persons in attendance.
3. LECTURES
Educating the muslim communities of Trinidad and Tobago is a priority of The ASH-NAD Foundation. In May, 2015 the Foundation sponsored a series of lectures by Shaykh Faisal Hamid Abdur-Razak of Canada. These lectures were held across 9 venues throughout the island.
In December, 2015 another series of lectures were held this time with Shaykh Jamal-ud- deen Hysaw and Shaykh Khalid Hussain and Qari Muhammad Ayyubb Asif. During a period of 2 weeks over 28 mosques played hosts to these learned scholars.
God willing, in December 2016, we will be hosting another lecture series with Shaykh Khalid Hussain and Ustadh Rashad Jameer.
4. CRICKET COMPETITIONS
Inter-jamaat cricket competition has been in existence over the past five years. Under the auspicies of The ASH-NAD Foundation which sponsors the competitions. As much as 36 teams compete for prizes ranging from $5,000.00 to $12,000.00 with non-winning teams receiving an incentive of $1,500.00. Divided into 3 divisions including hardball, the competition saw the establishment of the MPL – The Muslim Premier League in 2015.
Apart from the cricket competition, the Foundation is also the sole sponsor of South East Zone of the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board of Control cricket competition.
5. FAMILY DAY
December 20, 2015 was our 1st Family Day event being celebrated by The ASH-NAD Foundation. Designed with children in mind, it was open to everyone throughout the island. With bouncy castles, face painting, rock climbing, riding the bull, clowns, and an assortment of snacks. Those present certainly had a great time. The arrival of Santa Claus with toys for the children was one of the highlighted events of the day.
6. HOUSING
In keeping with its motto, “Giving A Helping Hand,’ the Foundation begain the project of assisting needy muslims with their homes either by rebuilding or renovating. This programme started in 2012 and saw Br. Adam of the Bronte Jamaat being the 1st person to have his home built in 4 weeks. Since then, there have been over 24 families who have been successfully assisted.
7. GIFT AND TOY DISTRIBUTION
During the month of Ramadan and over the past four (4) years, The ASH-NAD Foundation has donated toys and gifts to all mosques throughout the twin island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago for the celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr. This entails as many as over 800 children in each jamaat/mosque and over 85 mosques have benefitted from this programme every year thus far.
8. MOSQUE CONSTRUCTION AND RENOVATION PROJECTS
The Tacaragua Ahlus Sunnah wal Jamaah in 2014, was in the process of purchasing lands to accommodate parking and other usage of the Jamaat. The Foundation made a financial contribution towards this cause.
The Mayaro Mosque was a small building accommodating a growing muslim community. With limited funds the expansion works were halted. The Foundation was instrumental in erecting a 2 storey building for the Jamaat for use as a mosque and hall.
The ASJA Rio Claro Masjid needed assistance in replacing the aluminium shutters that served as windows. Arrangements were made with a hardware within the environs of Rio Claro to replace the shutters with modern French styled windows that enhanced the appearance of the building itself. This project was done in April 2013.
The Las Lomas Jamaat sought the assistance for air condition units for its masjid hall. In April 2014, The ASH-NAD Foundation donated and installed 2 x 5ton a/c units for the comfort of the jamaat members.
The Subratee Trace Mosque Jamaat – they were in the process of expanding their mosque and sought certain materials to complete their works. The Foundation was able to assist them with a donation of approx 14 metres of concrete for the project.
The Penal Rock Road Jamaat – In its process of expansion to accommodate a growing jamaat, the imam made a request for some materials. In January 2013, the Foundation donated 50 lengths of Z- Purlins as requested.
These are just some of the projects we assisted with. Other major assistance was given to mosques located in Ste Madeleine, La Romaine, Hermitage etc. financially and otherwise.
9. PILGRIMMAGE
The ASH-NAD Foundation has provided trips to deserving brothers to perform the Hajj and Umrah journeys (holy pilgrimage to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia).
Assistance has been given to various schools in numerous ways such as construction of prayer rooms to Couva East Secondary School, provision of appliances such as stoves, washing machine and dryer units to families. We have also assisted the Islamic Home For Children, provided educational scholarships to deserving individuals, and medical clinics at different venues in collaboration with other organizations.
10. BOOKS AND FREE LITERATURE
The ASH-NAD Foundation, in its bid to propagate Islamic knowledge amongst the various Jamaats, has been distributing books and Qur’ans by the container loads with easy access for collection of same. Books are available for free distribution including the Holy Qur’an and colour coded 30th part of the Qur’an.
One publication in particular, “Muhammad – his life based on the earliest sources” by Martin Lings has become a favourite and used by teachers and learned scholars in Trinidad and Tobago.
