COMPANY SECRETARY / ATTORNEY-AT-LAW

Imran S. Khan

"In 1998 at 22 years of age,

Imran became the youngest Attorney-at-Law

ever to be admitted to

practice in the Caribbean through the Council of

Legal Education"

Imran S. Khan is an Attorney-at-Law of 18 years standing at the bar having been admitted to practice in the High Court of Justice of Trinidad and Tobago in 1998.  Imran graduated from the University of the West Indies, Cavehill Campus in 1996 with a Bachelor of Laws Honours Degree.  From there he went on to the Hugh Wooding Law School from which he graduated in 1998 with the distinction of then being the youngest Attorney-at-Law ever to be admitted to practice in the Caribbean through the Council of Legal Education. At that time he was 22 years of age.

Imran has during his career worked alongside some of the most accomplished and distinguished Attorneys and Senior Counsel including, Mrs. Lynette Maharaj SC, Mr. Russel Martineau SC, Dr. Fenton Ramsahoye QC and Mr. Prakash Deonarine. He has had the privilege of being involved in several of the landmark cases to have passed through this jurisdiction in Commercial and Civil Law matters. His spheres of practice have included public law matters, Malicious Prosecution and False Imprisonment suits against the State, commercial and debt recovery suits, personal injury litigation, negligence suits, land matters and Insurance matters.

Since February 2004 Imran has been in private practice and has appeared for many clients afflicted by life altering, debilitating and severe injuries sustained in industrial and motor vehicle accidents. He has a passion for representing the underprivileged and dispossessed who are unable to afford costly litigation and has won several matters against the State and Public Authorities. One of the highlights of his career was being junior to leading Queen’s Counsel Dr. Fenton Ramsahoye in an Arbitration matter which was then reported to have involved the largest ever Court award made in this jurisdiction at that time. Another matter of specific significance to the muslim community was appearing on behalf of the Islamic Relief Center in the highly publicised “Trinity Cross” matter which resulted in the former Prime Minister Mr. Patrick Manning setting up a committee to review the system of national awards. This eventually led to a changing of the State’s top award from the “Trinity Cross” to the “Order of Trinidad and Tobago”.

Apart from litigation matters, Imran’s scope of practice also includes corporate clients such as Insurance Companies, Financial Service Providers, Manufacturing Companies, Construction Companies and Credit Unions. For these clients he has provided services dealing with the preparation and review of Contracts, Mortgages, Conveyances, Memoranda of Understanding, Shareholders Agreements, Joint Venture Agreements, Technical Services Agreements, Construction Agreements and Confidentiality Agreements, Registration of Trade Marks, etc.

He hails from San Fernando and is the son of a well known San Fernando businessman, Justice of the Peace and former Senator, the late Haji Ralph D. Khan. He is married to Hafsa Khan who was a former Patent Examiner for Trinidad and Tobago based at the Intellectual Property Office, Ministry of Legal Affairs.

Imran has a wealth of knowledge in the broadcast media. He was a broadcaster for over 10 years with one of the leading East Indian Radio Stations in Trinidad and Tobago, Radio 90.5 FM. He has also been involved in television and hosted his own show on the cable channel Islamic Broadcasting Network [IBN] entitled “Who’s Who in the Muslim Community” featuring prominent personalities in the muslim community. His program chronicled the lives of several stalwarts in the community such as former President of the Senate Dr. Wahid Ali [late] and former Minister and Ambassador to Caricom Mr. Kamaludin Mohammed [late] amongst others. This proved to be a series of historical significance as personalities such as Dr. Wahid Ali and Kamaludin Mohammed have since passed away.

Mr. Khan is an individual who sees it as part of his duty to give back to the community and therefore involves himself in numerous religious, social, cultural and charitable institutions. He has served as the General Secretary of the San Fernando ASJA Mosque Board from 2001 to 2014. Imran has also been President of the Islamic Home for Children Inc. from 2010 to present. The Islamic Home is an orphanage and home for battered, bruised and socially disadvantaged and displaced children. Imran is also a Director of a non-profit company ASWJI, which carries on academic and religious classes and also distributes zakaat (charity) and aid to the poor in society.

Imran is the current President of the Assembly of Southern Lawyers and is in his third successive term as President. The Assembly is a body representing the interests of the legal profession with specific reference to Southern practitioners. One of the highlights of his tenure as President is overseeing the first ever free legal aid clinic put on by the Assembly in conjunction with the San Fernando City Corporation. Close to 100 persons were seen free of charge. Imran has also served as a past Senior Executive member of the Law Association of Trinidad and Tobago under then President the late Dana Seetahal S.C.

Imran was also the last Chairman of the Adoption Board of Trinidad and Tobago under the Ministry of Gender, Youth and Child Development before the responsibility for adoption was transferred to the Childrens’ Authority of Trinidad and Tobago. As such in 2014 he sat on a Ministerially appointed sub-committee with the Chairman of the Childrens Authority of Trinidad and Tobago, Ms. Stephanie Daly S.C. to review the legislation pertaining to adoption. Out of this many pertinent recommendations were made to the Office of the Attorney General for the amendment of the applicable legislation.

In the academic sphere Imran has been an Associate Tutor at the Hugh Wooding Law School in Civil Procedure and Practice since 2013. As an Associate Tutor he had lectured to both year 1 and year 2 students at Hugh Wooding and has also been engaged in the marking of course work assignments and end of year examinations.
